I heard Nick Steele from San Pasqual transfered to Cibola. Probably wrestling 160. Can anyone confirm this? 2 time state champion and Virginia Beach champion should make things very entertaining in Div. 1.
Yes he is at Cibola now wrestling 152

Liberty wrestler Matthew Stevenson went 6-0 at the clash this weekend. He beat #1 ranked Minnesota wrestler Wyatt Lidberg - from St. Michael Albertville, MN. He also beat #3 ranked wrestler from Illinois - Joaquin Miranda from Huntley High School. Very impressive showing for him. Liberty went 4-2 and at the clash as as a team finishing 13th. Best finish ever for a Arizona team at the Clash.

Watched a few of his matches, he did a great job pulling that match against Lidberg out at the end. I'm tempted to wait until after Peoria to get some idea of where Liberty guys are going to wrestle (i.e. Stonebraker, Magri, and Stevenson all weighed in and wrestled at a weight lower than they have been at the Clash 152,160,170) but I'll probably get a wild hair and do new ones sometime this week anyway.

D1 2019-2020 Individual Rankings (updated on 1/14)

Obviously lots to process since Mile High, Peoria, other random duals/tourneys. Per usual, I'll try to explain my thoughts on the weight overall and why people are where they are. The usual disclaimer: these don't necessarily reflect what I think about who is better than who...it's just based on results from this season and past state finishes etc.

106

1. Damian Moreno, Kofa, 9th
2. Caidan Cole, Boulder Creek, 10th
3. Jayson Flener, Liberty, 9th
4. Daniel Mendoza, Perry, 12th
5. Javier Duran, Cesar Chavez, 12th
6. Marcus Seiter, Dobson, 9th

Putting Moreno at the #1 spot because of his win over Flener and Rael from Sahuarita, who defeated Cole.

113
1. Zander Phaturos, Liberty, 10th
2. Michael Welle, Red Mountain, 12th
3. Julian Ayala, Kofa, 10th
4. Demarko Gomez, Cibola, 10th
5. John Jarman, Mesa, 11th
6. Jaden Galindo, Cesar Chavez, 10th
7. Gabriel Corrales, Desert Ridge, 9th
8. Peyton Anderson, Mesa Mountain View, 11th

Welle hasn't wrestled any of the top guys at this weight other than Ayala who he pinned, so he goes a spot above him based on that.

120
1. Zach Espalin, Chandler, 11th
2. Noah Kasprowicz, Boulder Creek, 11th
3. Cesar Avelar, Brophy, 10th
4. Anthony Gonzales, Corona, 12th
5. Gabe Ortiz, Mesa Mountain View, 12th

I'd expect to see Roman Provenzano somewhere in here soon, but hard to rank him right now having wrestled no matches outside of the Clash.

126
1. Carson Coy, Liberty, 10th
2. Juan Sierra, Cibola, 10th
3. Bryce Bernard, Valley Vista, 12th
4. Jaxon Rohde, Boulder Creek, 12th
5. Cael Figueroa, Highland, 12th

Coy moves down to this weight as expected. Him and Sierra are very close, but giving Coy the nod based on a head-to-head victory last year.

132
1. Andres Avelar, Cesar Chavez, 12th
2. Andrew Correa, Liberty, 12th
3. Tanner Castillo, Red Mountain, 12th
4. Mourece Ramirez, Desert Vista, 11th
5. Isaiah Valenzuela, Hamilton, 12th
6. Raul Aispuro, Kofa, 12th

I'm including Avelar here even though he wrestled at 138 at Peoria due to barely missing weight. He wrestled 132 at Zinkin though, so I'd assume that is the best weight for him. If he's at 138, he'd be the #1 there and everyone at 132 would shift up a spot. Valenzuela hasn't wrestled since the very start of the year, but for now I'm going to keep him in based on his state runner-up finish last year.

138
1. Tyler Sauter, Liberty, 10th
2. Denton Hardt, Queen Creek, 12th
3. Jonah Muhammad, Hamilton, 11th
4. Hugh Sterns, Sandra Day O'Connor, 12th
5. Caleb Pool, Tucson, 11th
6. Ben Torres, Cibola, 12th
7. Domenic Hurtado, Desert Vista, 11th
8. Mark Prado, Shadow Ridge, 12th

Torres is hard to know where to rank, as his main wins are over Correa and Delgado from Liberty who are both at different weights now. Also, Muhammad dropped down to this weight as expected.

145
1. Zeke Guerrero, Cibola, 12th
2. Edgar Delgado, Liberty, 12th
3. Matthew Andonov, Sandra Day O'Connor, 12th
4. Dalton Loyden, Chandler, 9th
5. Aaron Rascon, Kofa, 11th
6. Adam Booth, Mesa Mountain View, 12th
7. Tlayolot Delfin, Dobson, 12th
8. Shane Aguarin, Corona, 12th
9. Victor Chavez, Cibola, 11th

Lots of tough kids here, I think Guerrero is the clear #1 but could see anyone of the other guys making the finals.

152
1. Alfonso Martinez, Desert Vista, 12th
2. Nicholas Steele, Cibola, 11th
3. Anthony Morales, Kofa, 12th
4. Connor Blakeman, Red Mountain, 12th
5. Gage Beaton, Liberty, 12th
6. Chayce Edwards, Tucson, 12th
7. Kalvin Boggs, Queen Creek, 12th

Adding Steele back in as someone confirmed that he will be at 152 once he is healthy. I'm not sure what weight Morales will be at, considering he was at 152 all year and then at 160 for Mile High. I'm assuming he didn't make weight? Obviously I don't know but going to put him at 152 for now.

160

1. Kamyn Stonebreaker, Liberty, 12th
2. Giovanni Meza, Cesar Chavez, 12th
3. Sebastian Valencia, Cibola, 12th
4. Jacob Cisneros, Boulder Creek, 11th
5. Jarrett Huber, Mesa Mountain View, 9th
6. Justin Prigge, Queen Creek, 12th

Returning 4th place state finisher Prigge drops down to 160, losing in the blood round of Peoria to Huber. Think the top 4 are pretty clear for this weight. If Morales moves up to this weight, I'd probably put him at #3.

170
1. Preston Cameau, Desert Vista, 12th
2. Freddy Latu, Hamilton, 12th
3. Ikaika Maldonado, Perry, 12th
4. David Sweetman, Brophy, 9th
5. Keaton Steck, Desert Ridge, 12th
6. Nicholas Magri, Liberty

Latu moves down and Steck has a good showing at Peoria with a win over Magri.

182
1. Matthew Stevenson, Liberty, 12th
2. Makai Obregon, Valley Vista, 12th
3. Thomas Derr, Brophy, 12th
4. Cesar Pedregon, Red Mountain, 12th
5. Wayne Dunn, Mesa Mountain View, 12th
6. Alex Galindo, Cesar Chavez, 12th

Nothing too exciting here other than Latu moving down.

195
1. Liam Hoffmeyer, Cibola, 11th
2. Kimball Begay, Mesa Mountain View, 12th
3. Ryan Castillo, Hamilton, 12th
4. Bobby Brookins, Red Mountain, 12th
5. Gavin Dodge, Liberty, 10th
6. Rueben Maldonado, Cesar Chavez, 12th
7. Michael Moreno, Boulder Creek, 12th
8. Christian Bower, Chaparral, 12th

Hoffmeyer and Castillo moving down really shake this weight up. A case can be made for either Hoffmeyer or Begay as the #1, I just flipped a coin :)

220
1. Luke Padwe, Pinnacle, 12th
2. Nathaniel Deasey, Chandler, 11th
3. David Palosika, Mountain Pointe, 12th
4. Preston Arriola, Mesa, 12th
5. William Durbin, Dobson, 10th
6. James Huber, Mesa Mountain View, 11th
7. Jackson Kay, Boulder Creek, 12th
8. Julius Thomas, Red Mountain, 12th
9. Vincente Maestes, Liberty, 12th

Really deep weight, which is not the norm for 220 by any means. I think the top 3 is a tier above the other 6, who I think could all beat each other any given day.

285
1. Jacob Moore, Boulder Creek, 11th
2. Alex Edjourian, Perry, 12th
3. Dante Smith, Desert Ridge, 12th
4. Gregory Down, Cesar Chavez, 12th
5. Frank Thompson, Liberty, 12th
6. Marcos Meza, Cibola, 12th

Becomes a little clearer after Peoria.

Anthony Morales missed weight by .2 lbs so he had to go 60's

152

1. Alfonso Martinez, Desert Vista, 12th
2. Nicholas Steele, Cibola, 11th
3. Connor Blakeman, Red Mountain, 12th
4. Anthony Morales, Kofa, 12th
5. Gage Beaton, Liberty, 12th

3. Connor Blakeman, Red Mountain, & 4. Anthony Morales, Kofa, - if we are basing ranking on results, Anthony should be #3 since he moved up a weight class (at MILE HIGH) and placed 3rd; beating D4 #3Hunter Ogle (twice that day). Conner placed 5th.

Thoughts?

Geez I haven’t seen so many kids miss weight by .2 (or at all) in such a short period of time ever (Morales, Avelar, Bernard). Honestly, I hadn’t thought about Blakeman/Morales much when ranking them because they didn’t have common opponents etc. I do agree that Morales had a better performance at Mile High and over the course of the year altogether, so I’ll switch them. Definitely appreciate the input!

I agree with the comments about the 220s but have noticed Chandler has been forfeiting at 220 since the Las Vegas Tournament. Where is Deasey?

D1 2019-2020 Individual Rankings (updated on 1/20)

Updated after another week of duals, Flowing Wells, and Doc Wright.

106

1. Jayson Flener, Liberty, 9th
2. Damian Moreno, Kofa, 9th
3. Caidan Cole, Boulder Creek, 10th
4. Daniel Mendoza, Perry, 12th
5. Joey Jarman, Mesa, 9th
6. Javier Duran, Cesar Chavez, 12th

Flener with a solid performance at FW, avenging a previous loss to Moreno.

113
1. Zander Phaturos, Liberty, 10th
2. Michael Welle, Red Mountain, 12th
3. Julian Ayala, Kofa, 10th
4. Demarko Gomez, Cibola, 10th
5. John Jarman, Mesa, 11th
6. Jaden Galindo, Cesar Chavez, 10th
7. Gabriel Corrales, Desert Ridge, 9th
8. Peyton Anderson, Mesa Mountain View, 11th

120
1. Zach Espalin, Chandler, 11th
2. Noah Kasprowicz, Boulder Creek, 11th
3. Roman Provenzano, Liberty, 10th
4. Cesar Avelar, Brophy, 10th
5. Anthony Gonzales, Corona, 12th
6. Gabe Ortiz, Mesa Mountain View, 12th

Provenzano enters the rankings as expected, splitting matches with Kasprowicz at FW. Keeping Kasp at 2 because of his wins over Avelar, Gonzales, Jarman etc.

126
1. Carson Coy, Liberty, 10th
2. Juan Sierra, Cibola, 10th
3. Cael Figueroa, Highland, 12th
4. Isaiah Valenzuela, Hamilton, 12th
5. Bryce Bernard, Valley Vista, 12th
6. Jaxon Rohde, Boulder Creek, 12th

Valenzuela is back and at 126. Figueroa had a very nice Flowing Wells beating Rohde and Valenzuela. It looks like he might have wrestled Bernard last week, but the results aren't on Track.

132
1. Andres Avelar, Cesar Chavez, 12th
2. Andrew Correa, Liberty, 12th
3. Tanner Castillo, Red Mountain, 12th
4. Mourece Ramirez, Desert Vista, 11th
5. Preston Ferrell, Hamilton, 12th

Good week for Ferrell, splitting matches with Ramirez and placing 3rd at Flowing Wells.

138
1. Tyler Sauter, Liberty, 10th
2. Jonah Muhammad, Hamilton, 11th
3. Dalton Loyden, Chandler, 9th
4. Denton Hardt, Queen Creek, 12th
5. Kaleb Pool, Tucson, 11th
6. Hugh Sterns, Sandra Day O'Connor, 12th

Sauter is the clear top guy here, unless Avelar does end up moving up. I think Muhammad has established himself as the #2 guy after this weekend with pins over Hurtado, Loyden, and Pool, despite an early season loss to Hardt. Quite a few honorable mention guys in this weight too with Torres, Rascon, Prado, Hurtado.

145
1. Zeke Guerrero, Cibola, 12th
2. Edgar Delgado, Liberty, 12th
3. Matthew Andonov, Sandra Day O'Connor, 12th
4. Adam Booth, Mesa Mountain View, 12th
5. Tlayolot Delfin, Dobson, 12th
6. Shane Aguarin, Corona, 12th

No real notable results from the weekend, just opens up a bit with Rascon and Loyden down at 138.

152
1. Alfonso Martinez, Desert Vista, 12th
2. Nicholas Steele, Cibola, 11th
3. Anthony Morales, Kofa, 12th
4. Connor Blakeman, Red Mountain, 12th
5. Gage Beaton, Liberty, 12th
6. Chayce Edwards, Tucson, 12th
7. Kalvin Boggs, Queen Creek, 12th

Nothing really changes here, but definitely get confirmation that Morales should be the #3 guy here after an impressive performance at Flowing Wells.

160

1. Kamyn Stonebreaker, Liberty, 12th
2. Giovanni Meza, Cesar Chavez, 12th
3. Sebastian Valencia, Cibola, 12th
4. Jacob Cisneros, Boulder Creek, 11th
5. Jarrett Huber, Mesa Mountain View, 9th
6. Justin Prigge, Queen Creek, 12th

170
1. Preston Cameau, Desert Vista, 12th
2. Freddy Latu, Hamilton, 12th
3. Ikaika Maldonado, Perry, 12th

6. Nicholas Magri, Liberty

182
1. Matthew Stevenson, Liberty, 12th
2. Makai Obregon, Valley Vista, 12th
3. Thomas Derr, Brophy, 12th
4. Cesar Pedregon, Red Mountain, 12th
5. Wayne Dunn, Mesa Mountain View, 12th
6. Kaiden Cisneros, Mesa, 10th

Adding Cisneros after a nice win over Galindo.

195
1. Liam Hoffmeyer, Cibola, 11th
2. Kimball Begay, Mesa Mountain View, 12th
3. Ryan Castillo, Hamilton, 12th
4. Bobby Brookins, Red Mountain, 12th
5. Gavin Dodge, Liberty, 10th
6. Rueben Maldonado, Cesar Chavez, 12th
7. Michael Moreno, Boulder Creek, 12th
8. Christian Bower, Chaparral, 12th

220
1. Luke Padwe, Pinnacle, 12th
2. Nathaniel Deasey, Chandler, 11th
3. David Palosika, Mountain Pointe, 12th

6. James Huber, Mesa Mountain View, 11th
7. Jackson Kay, Boulder Creek, 12th
8. Julius Thomas, Red Mountain, 12th

Durbin moves ahead of Arriola after a 9-2 head to head win.

285
1. Jacob Moore, Boulder Creek, 11th
2. Alex Edjourian, Perry, 12th

Valenzuela is back and at 126. Figueroa had a very nice Flowing Wells beating Rohde and Valenzuela. It looks like he might have wrestled Bernard last week, but the results aren't on Track.

Bernard defeated Figueroa in the dual last week, but didn't finish in the top 6 at Doc Wright, losing to two wrestlers from smaller schools.

Thanks for the info wjd. I actually totally overlooked that he was in Doc Wright because he was kind of nestled in a random spot of the bracket, but Obregon was there so I should have looked a little better. I think I'd have to put him at 3 despite losing twice at Doc Wright, which looks like had a lot of tough smaller school kids in it. His only other losses are to Espalin by a point and Troy Ramirez, and he has wins over Figueroa and a major over Rohde. Again, appreciate the input on this one :)

Great match at 220 at Centennial as well. Padwe outlasted Palosika with a 1-0 win. Padwe's 7 wins to get to the finals were all pins totally just over 3 minutes, with 3 pins under 20 seconds and just one barely over a minute. Surprised Palosika took him the distance and almost pulled out the win just missing a takedown late.

The 195 & 220 finals were awesome to watch!
Keep an eye on Cibola they could be a dark horse especially if Steele is back.

Definitely 2 possible state finals matches there that were fun to watch despite the low scores. If Steele is back, I'd actually think Cibola is the favorite to finish as runner-up behind Liberty, due to them having more "guaranteed" big point scorers than the rest of the pack (i.e. can't imagine Sierra, Guerrero, Steele or Hoffmeyer getting lower than 3rd) and other tough kids who could also place (Gomez, Torres, Chavez, Valencia). I hope I'm wrong but that's how I see it. Also will try to update rankings today but might be tomorrow depending on how much of a slacker at work I decide to be :)

D1 2019-2020 Individual Rankings (updated on 1/27)

Updated after another week of duals and tourneys. Since we are getting close the postseason, I'm going to include the section that each wrestler is in.

106

1. Jayson Flener, Liberty, 9th (Section 2)
2. Damian Moreno, Kofa, 9th (Section 2)
3. Caidan Cole, Boulder Creek, 10th (Section 2)
4. Joey Jarman, Mesa, 9th (Section 4)
5. Daniel Mendoza, Perry, 12th (Section 1)
6. Javier Duran, Cesar Chavez, 12th (Section 4)

Mendoza with a surprising loss to Highland, so I'm switching him and Jarman. Hard to justify moving anyone up over any of these guys IMO.

113
1. Zander Phaturos, Liberty, 10th (Section 2)
2. Julian Ayala, Kofa, 10th (Section 2)
3. Demarko Gomez, Cibola, 10th (Section 2)
4. John Jarman, Mesa, 11th (Section 4)
5. Jaden Galindo, Cesar Chavez, 10th (Section 4)
6. Peyton Anderson, Mesa Mountain View, 11th (Section 4)
7. Michael Welle, Red Mountain, 12th (Section 4)
8. Porter Ray, Desert Ridge, 12th (Section 3)

Anderson with a good week in duals, beating Jarman and Welle, with Jarman defeating Welle handily as well. Jarman/Galindo/Anderson hard to rank because they've all beaten each other, but ranking based on Jarman's performance last year, him having the most dominant win out of the group (a pin over Galindo), and Galindo having 2 victories over Anderson. Also of note is Corrales and Ray from Desert Ridge flopping weights at 113/120.

120
1. Zach Espalin, Chandler, 11th (Section 1)
2. Noah Kasprowicz, Boulder Creek, 11th (Section 2)
3. Roman Provenzano, Liberty, 10th (Section 2)
4. Cesar Avelar, Brophy, 10th (Section 1)
5. Anthony Gonzales, Corona, 12th (Section 3)
6. Gabe Ortiz, Mesa Mountain View, 12th (Section 4)

126
1. Carson Coy, Liberty, 10th (Section 2)
2. Juan Sierra, Cibola, 10th (Section 2)
3. Bryce Bernard, Valley Vista, 12th (Section 3)
4. Cael Figueroa, Highland, 12th (Section 3)
5. Isaiah Valenzuela, Hamilton, 12th (Section 1)
6. Jaxon Rohde, Boulder Creek, 12th (Section 2)

Moving Bernard to 3 with win over Figueroa last week, but I think 3-5 here are all pretty even.

132
1. Andres Avelar, Cesar Chavez, 12th (Section 4)
2. Andrew Correa, Liberty, 12th (Section 2)
3. Tanner Castillo, Red Mountain, 12th (Section 4)
4. Mourece Ramirez, Desert Vista, 11th (Section 3)
5. Preston Ferrell, Hamilton, 12th (Section 1)
6. Gunnar Luke, Mesa Mountain View, 10th (Section 4)
7. Victor Chavez, Cibola, 11th, (Section 2)

Adding Luke after making semis at Peoria and winning the Pack tourney, and Chavez who has made his way down to 132. Also looks like Avelar is going to stay at 132 after barely missing weight and still winning Peoria at 138.

138
1. Tyler Sauter, Liberty, 10th (Section 2)
2. Jonah Muhammad, Hamilton, 11th (Section 1)
3. Ben Torres, Cibola, 12th (Section 2)
4. Mark Prado, Shadow Ridge, 12th (Section 3)
5. Dalton Loyden, Chandler, 9th (Section 1)
6. Denton Hardt, Queen Creek, 12th (Section 3)
7. Kaleb Pool, Tucson, 11th (Section 1)
8. Hugh Sterns, Sandra Day O'Connor, 12th (Section 2)

Torres and Prado both had good weekends defeating Loyden, even though both matches could have gone the other way (close call at end of Prado match, Loyden leading before getting pinned vs Torres). I still think Sauter is the #1 guy here, but anyone 1-8 could put together a good tournament and win it. Will definitely be the most fun weight to watch in a few weeks.

145
1. Zeke Guerrero, Cibola, 12th (Section 2)
2. Edgar Delgado, Liberty, 12th (Section 2)
3. Matthew Andonov, Sandra Day O'Connor, 12th (Section 2)
4. Adam Booth, Mesa Mountain View, 12th (Section 4)
5. Tlayolot Delfin, Dobson, 12th (Section 4)
6. Shane Aguarin, Corona, 12th (Section 3)

Nothing of note, but weigh ins suggest that Blakeman may be dropping to this weight.

152
1. Alfonso Martinez, Desert Vista, 12th (Section 3)
2. Nicholas Steele, Cibola, 11th (Section 2)
3. Anthony Morales, Kofa, 12th (Section 2)
4. Connor Blakeman, Red Mountain, 12th (Section 4)
5. Gage Beaton, Liberty, 12th (Section 2)
6. Chayce Edwards, Tucson, 12th (Section 1)
7. Kalvin Boggs, Queen Creek, 12th (Section 3)

160

1. Kamyn Stonebreaker, Liberty, 12th (Section 2)
2. Giovanni Meza, Cesar Chavez, 12th (Section 4)
3. Sebastian Valencia, Cibola, 12th (Section 2)
4. Jacob Cisneros, Boulder Creek, 11th (Section 2)
5. Caleb Milnes, Perry, 11th (Section 1)
6. Jarrett Huber, Mesa Mountain View, 9th (Section 4)

Most notable thing here is Milnes dropping down from 182 earlier in the year. He had wins over 2 of the top ranked 182 pounders (Pedregon and Dunn) so will probably make some noise down at this weight.

170
1. Preston Cameau, Desert Vista, 12th (Section 3)
2. Freddy Latu, Hamilton, 12th (Section 1)
3. Ikaika Maldonado, Perry, 12th (Section 1)
4. David Sweetman, Brophy, 9th (Section 1)
5. Keaton Steck, Desert Ridge, 12th (Section 3)
6. Nicholas Magri, Liberty (Section 2)

182
1. Matthew Stevenson, Liberty, 12th (Section 2)
2. Makai Obregon, Valley Vista, 12th (Section 3)
3. Wayne Dunn, Mesa Mountain View, 12th (Section 4)
4. Thomas Derr, Brophy, 12th (Section 1)
5. Cesar Pedregon, Red Mountain, 12th (Section 4)
6. Yousef Sadi, Tucson, 12th (Section 1)

Good week for Dunn, with wins over Pedregon and Mark Orlando (Shadow Mountain), who has a win over Derr. There are a handful of people I could put at #6, all who have both some decent wins and some head-scratching losses, but I'm putting Sadi here because I personally think he's the best out of the group from what I've seen.

195
1. Kimball Begay, Mesa Mountain View, 12th (Section 4)
2. Liam Hoffmeyer, Cibola, 11th (Section 2)
3. Ryan Castillo, Hamilton, 12th (Section 1)
4. Preston Arriola, Mesa, 12th (Section 4)
5. Gavin Dodge, Liberty, 10th (Section 2)
6. Bobby Brookins, Red Mountain, 12th (Section 4)
7. Rueben Maldonado, Cesar Chavez, 12th (Section 4)
8. Michael Moreno, Boulder Creek, 12th (Section 2)
9. Christian Bower, Chaparral, 12th (Section 2)

Begay takes the top spot with a win over Hoffmeyer, and Arriola moves down and beat Brookins in his 195 pound debut.

220
1. Luke Padwe, Pinnacle, 12th (Section 2)
2. Nathaniel Deasey, Chandler, 11th (Section 1)
3. David Palosika, Mountain Pointe, 12th (Section 3)
4. William Durbin, Dobson, 10th (Section 4)
