Attendance looks good for those looking for mat time.

What benefit is there for kids to drive up to Camp Verde?
This is the place for quality mat time during the off season. The tournament attracts many serious contenders from throughout Arizona and from out of state. Anybody that’s a serious wrestler, practices and participates in Summer tournaments as preparation for the Winter season. Each wrestler who attends is given the opportunity to wrestle up to five matches. This is a big draw for other teams statewide, as well as teams from out of state, who face the same dilemma, which is the lack of wrestling competition. Nonstop grappling takes place on seven mats and by the end of the day there is an abundance of mat burns, a few bloody noses, but a wealth of wrestling experience for each athlete that makes the trip to Camp Verde.

Many kids perform hours of practice throughout the week in preparation to attend New Breeds, “Weekend Wars” tournaments. Their reward is to do battle with another dedicated young champion, pushing each other to even greater heights. Kids that wish to move up another level in their wrestling skills, can ask any coach for technical advice. I guarantee before the day is over, if you wrestled against the best, they will have helped you expose the weaknesses you must work on. Many coaches and parents come together to create a motivational environment most conducive to the wrestlers success. We measure and motivate them; and so they leave here highly inspired with an attitude to excel.

Wrestlers who do not participate in our Weekend Wars, lose valuable mat time, opportunities for receiving critical technical advice, and miss out coming together with individuals from various races, economic backgrounds, and different styles of wrestling quality levels. All of this free of charge!

Everything is free. All we want is mat time for all kids. I highly recommend it to anyone that wishes to move up another level in their wrestling skills. Weigh-in starts at 7:00AM. Folkstyle Wrestling starts at 8:00 AM (three one minute periods) and usually finishes by noon. We would like parents and coaches to ensure that all your kids sign a waiver (see attached). You must bring a waiver every week. For those of you who have been asking how they can help support these weekend wars, I could really use help with refereeing and a case of water bottles. Once again thanks to all the Coaches and Parents who support this function. Many kids thanked us for putting on Weekend Wars for them. Many kids are benefiting from all our collaborative efforts as a brotherhood.

Wrestlers- Three one minute periods of Folkstyle competition. Kindergarten thru high school. Tons of kids show up in every weight class. No lifting in the air. All wrestlers should bring their own white athletic tape and wrestling shoes. (singlet’s and head gear are optional) You must sign the attached release form. Weigh-ins start at 7:00 AM and wrestling commences at 8:00 AM. Please don’t be late as this only holds up everything.

Just a reminder, please have your wrestlers bring their own, white tape, nose plugs, band aids and med kit. I cannot afford to supply all of Arizona's medical needs. Contrary to rumors circulating. I did not receive a "Stimulus" package from Obama.

If you are using Map Quest, use 321 W Apache Trail, Camp Verde AZ 86322 as your destination.
Thank you Coach Chagolla

“Weekend Wars” attendance this Saturday April 16th was huge with lots of wrestlers exhibiting varying levels of expertise seeking to match their skills against those have worked hard all month to test their newly acquired techniques.

This weekend was a great showing as we had visitors from Morenci, Flagstaff, Prescott, Mingus, Mayer, Liberty, Peoria, Verrado, Centennial, Ironwood, Bradshaw Mountain, Mount Eldon Middle School, Mountain Trail Middle School, Millennium, Boulder City High School Nevada, Maryvale, Wittmann, Henderson King Elementary Nevada, Chino Valley, Mountain Ridge, Garrett Junior High Boulder City, Glendale Mountain Ridge, De Miquel, Mesa Desert Ridge, Sinaqua, San Tan Valley Combs High School, Winslow, Holbrook, Payson, Clarkdale, Rimrock, Carl Hayden, Sandra Day O’conner, North High, Valley Lutheran, Yuma High, Pinnacle, Northern AZ Grapplers, New Breed, Eclipse and Hayden High.

I can't believe how many requests I have already had inquiring about dates for weekend wars. Looks like this years attendance will be extremely high. Even the elementary weight inquiries are up. Can't wait for this Saturday.

If you attend every Weekend Wars, you should easily exceed over 100 matches in the off-season. With those kind of numbers it is inevitable that you will improve.

Arizona is on its way up. Congratulations to one and all. In 2016-2017 I look forward to watching Arizona Wrestling’s quality level rise and advance to a position of excellence. With so many dedicated Coaches, parents and teams, I am confident that those participating in off-season Weekend Wars will again improve in leaps and bounds finding themselves at the top of the State podium.

Thank you

We had another great showing. This weekend was a great showing as we had visitors from Morenci, Chino Valley, Holbrook, Tucson Cyclones, Flagstaff, Olympus, Basha Bears, Mountain Trail, Thorobred, Hillcrest, Page, Mingus, Monument Valley, Sandra Day O’Conner, Bradshaw, Peoria, Ironwood, Maryvale, Coconino, Clarkdale, North, De Miquel, Glendale, Mountain Ridge, Mesa, Saint John Basco, Heritage Middle School, Mount Elden, Litchfield Park, Del Rio, Hamilton, Tar Water, Liberty Traditional, Basis, Granville, Flag Jr. Academy, Payson, Fulton, Queen Creek, Walden Grove, Centennial, Pinnacle, Camp Verde, Cornville, Rim Rock, Sossaman jr. high. and several other wrestling clubs.

Most kids averaged 12 matches. You can’t beat that for free. It goes without saying that those competitors who compete against quality wrestlers in the off-season, will prevail in the winter season. Life is a series of choices that lead to your destiny. Remember that you are in the driver’s seat in your journey. Make the right choices and life can be rewarding.

If you are looking for great competition then this is where you want to be May 14th. I encourage those of you that have not yet joined in on the fun at Weekend Wars, to please come and see for yourself what the excitement is all about.

This rule goes into affect immediately at Weekend Wars.

NATIONAL FEDERATION OF STATE
HIGH SCHOOL ASSOCIATIONS
NEWS RELEASE
New Potentially Dangerous Hold Identified in High School Wrestling
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Contact: Elliot Hopkins
INDIANAPOLIS, IN (May 18, 2016) — At its April 6-8 meeting in Indianapolis, the National
Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) Wrestling Rules Committee added another
maneuver to the list of potentially dangerous holds in high school wrestling.

The new potentially dangerous hold occurs when a wrestler, from a standing position, is placed
in a body lock with one or both arms trapped and then is lifted and is unable to use his arm(s) to break the fall.

“The rear standing position with a trapped arm should be considered potentially dangerous and
should be monitored very closely by the referee,” said Elliot Hopkins, NFHS director of sports and student services and liaison to the Wrestling Rules Committee. “Coaches, officials and competitors should be aware of the potential for injury in this situation if the defensive wrestler is returned to the mat and has no arm available to break the fall.”

The committee also approved a change in Rule 5-11-2 that will award penalty point(s) to the
offensive wrestler in situations where the defensive wrestler exhibits inappropriate behavior in order to avoid being pinned.

Rule 5-11-2(i) will now read, “. . . when a defensive wrestler commits a technical violation,
applies an illegal hold/maneuver, commits unnecessary roughness or unsportsmanlike act during an imminent or near fall situation, the offensive wrestler shall be awarded a penalty point(s) in addition to the near fall points in accordance with (subarticles) f-h at the next stoppage.”

“The committee felt that when the defensive wrestler uses unethical techniques to avoid being
pinned, the offensive wrestler should not only be awarded the near fall or fall points, but should be awarded the appropriate penalty point(s) for that transgression at the next stoppage of the match,’ Hopkins said.

I am truly touched by your generosity, your spirit, and willingness to go out of your way to help kids. You are a real Mentor. I am indeed lucky to have a friend like you in my life. Thank you again for being so thoughtful in your support.

WOW! is the best way to describe Weekend Wars this past Saturday. A lot of wrestlers showed up and produced numerous quantities of great quality matches.

Coaches and Wrestlers thanked Camp Verde for providing the free quality mat time. They have committed to return to help attain their personal goals of over one hundred matches in the off season.

It goes without saying that those competitors who compete against quality wrestlers in the off-season, will prevail in the winter season. Life is a series of choices that lead to your destiny. We saw a lot of great action with plenty of quality competition throughout the room. The addition of out of state rivalry (Bayfield Colorado) made it all the more electrifying.

Everyone averaged 10 or more matches. Many commented how they just can’t believe how many matches one gets in just 3 hours.

By 11:00 AM many were on their way home to enjoy the rest of the day.

It is so gratifying when these wrestlers come up to you and thank you for providing them with free mat time and free camp clinic.

It is easily visible that these wrestlers who are dedicating themselves during the off season will be standing on podiums throughout the regular season.

I would like to thank all the Coaches and wrestling clubs for their dedication and commitment towards supporting the youth in their communities. I recognize your efforts as being life-long and bone deep.

Through the efforts of these exceptional groups of people who attend/support Weekend Wars, we all will continue to shape and forge partnerships that will improve the quality of Arizona Wrestling. The shared experiences are key in building a future of developmental opportunities for all our youth.

In a lot of cases today most kids are raised by single parents or Grandparents who, in the twilight of their years now find themselves raising kids again. So we must all work together to create a motivational environment most conducive to our children’s success. We as a community must become mentors. We must play an important role as an architect and builder in the art of teaching our children. We must help them excel in all that they do, so they can look forward to a brighter future, full of many wonderful and exciting opportunities.

This is the main reason why Camp Verde New Breed Wrestling, opens their doors during the off-season. It’s our desire to provide mentorship to youth at risk, to measure and motivate them and encourage Fathers to participate in their childs learning agenda.

It is a pleasure to get together with friends and colleagues bi-monthly. It feels good to belong to a distinguished group of leaders in this effort. This commitment to collaboration, this shared vision and common cause towards a brotherhood has been exhilarating and gratifying.

I invite those of you who have not had an opportunity to participate in our next Weekend Wars, this Saturday July 23rd, to come on up and join in on the fun.

Thank you
