MINGUS UNION HIGH SCHOOL
WRESTLING ROOM

NO WRESTLER, TEAM, OR SPECTATOR ENTRY FEE

ALL ATHLETES MUST PRESENT A CURRENT USA WRESTLING CARD AT REGISTRATION

GET 8-12 MATCHES BEFORE LUNCH FOR FREE!

All wrestlers are required to submit a parent-signed release waiver in order to participate. Form is attached.

This is the place for quality mat time during the off season. The tournament attracts many serious contenders from throughout Arizona. Anybody that’s a serious wrestler, practices and participates in Summer competition, as preparation for the Winter season. Each wrestler who attends is given the opportunity to wrestle up to ten matches. This is a big draw for teams statewide, who face the same dilemma, which is the lack of wrestling competition. Ten simultaneous high school matches and ten Middle school matches of nonstop grappling takes place every three minutes and by the end of the day there is an abundance of mat burns, a few bloody noses, but a wealth of wrestling experience for each athlete that makes the trip to Mingus High School’s (Weekend Wars). Singlet’s and head gear are optional. Three one minute periods of Folkstyle.

Wrestling starts at 8AM

There are still no entry fee charges. Everything is free.

2. Wrestlers in 1st grade thru 12th grade are permitted to participate.

3. USA Wrestling cards are mandatory.

4. An additional signed waiver and release of liability is still required. (see attached)

5. Singlet’s and head gear are optional.

Several kids came up to me at State to thank me for making Weekend Wars available to them. They said that it was because of Weekend Wars mat time that they were able to take the top spot on the podium. I want to thank them publicly for their words of appreciation. It meant a lot to me too know that our efforts made a difference.

Many years ago a burden was placed in my heart, to reach the youth at risk, to reach the lost and to reach those preparing for adulthood. And so I utilize wrestling as a platform to reach and teach young men and women. Everyday, I go to wrestling practice to make a difference in someone’s life. To try to help them from making all the same mistakes others before them have made. To recognize and appreciate all the gifts, talents and abilities they have been blessed with. That someday they will have to give an account of all the things they accomplished with those gifts, as to how much of those gifts were used for their own personal gain and how much of it was used to help others as a way to pay forward. That they are in charge of their own destiny by the choices they make. That they are their own worst enemy because inside of them they have two dogs fighting. One is good and the other evil. I teach them that the one they feed the most will determine their destiny.

All are welcomed and invited to participate at Weekend Wars. So put it on your calendars April 23 is the first day.

In response to your many questions, please arrive no later than 7:30 am. All groups will be placed together. It will be up to every individual to pair themselves up with someone at their level of expertise. You can choose how many matches you wish to wrestle. Every parent or coach can be the referee to their kids matches. Some kids like to wrestle only kids at their level or against those at a higher level and thereby expose what weaknesses they may need to work on. They only have to wear shorts and a tshirt just what is necessary to compete but no one can wear a school affiliated uniform. Sorry there are no lockers or showers available. Unfortunately there are no Trainers available for injuries. All injuries will be up to their coach/parent to address. All major injuries will require us to contact 911. Fortunately very few injuries have required us to do so. All contestants are required to fill out a waiver to compete.

What benefit is there for kids to drive up to Cottonwood? This is the place for quality mat time during the off season. It should be every wrestler’s goal to attain at least 100 matches in the off-season, if they wish to be competitive in the regular season. Many coaches were grateful and expressed their content about their kids getting ten matches and yet leave early enough to get home and spend the rest of their day with friends and family. We always finish before noon which attracts many wrestlers and their coaches.

Our next Weekend Wars is on MAY 7th and all are welcome. SO COME ON UP AND JOIN US! Don't forget your waivers.

You do not have to be with a team. It is all about individual improvement. It is run like a Jamboree style tournament, with everyone choosing their own match up. You only wrestle against those you choose to wrestle. Score is not kept to prevent fear of loss. It's all about mat time.
