very cool flowing wells this year.
I was impressed with the quality d1 schools and how well some of the smaller divisions did against formidable opponents.

some observations:

Farina had a tough win against a Missouri state Champ... (some say controversial... but from where I sat it was a legit win)

Safford's Dawon Andrews is tough / fast / driven: he is only a freshman and he will be a force to be reckoned with in any competition.

Barker and Hovis of Seton Catholic: both are solid wrestlers and they both will have much success. I enjoyed watching them wrestle.

Sahuaro's heavyweight needs a stern talking to for his incredibly unsportsmanlike behavior (its a pet peeve of mine)

Jarod Booth is doing fantastically as he moves into his final competitions as a high school senior for Mesa Mt View. He walked through every opponent at this tourney. Nobody offered a solid defense for his overwhelming takedowns / top pressure. Kudos to Mesa Mt View! They had an encampment outside the venue that showed the community they have worked so hard to develop among their parents /athletes. So very cool.

 

[East Valley]

chingon76, I totally agree with your break down. There was a cool intensity in that tournament. All the weight classes were loaded. 108, 128, 134 & 147 especially. 147 had some incrdible matches. Crook vs Taylor semi & Taylor vs Andrews final! 134 Mason vs Farina & Laguna vs Kline semis then the Farina vs Kline final & Mason vs Laguna for 3rd & 4th.

It's going to be a real dogfight for the D1 State Title. Ironwood Ridge has created a slight edge. That tough schedule has paid off. Sunnyside seems like they are just starting to hit their stride & Mtn View is right there.

I want Mtn Views BBQ trailor! That was a sweet set up kudos to the parents. It's going to be crazy the next two weeks to see what weights people settle in at.

Great to hear it. I know our sport is high intensity and high buy in from our athletes. That means that emotions run high and tears / punches can easily happen. We (our head coach and myself) have been trying to help our athletes realize that a champion is a champion on and off the mat. A champion conducts themselves even when they are handed a defeat or an unfair call.

We battle the attitude everyday and we strive to make those positive behaviors ingrain in our wrestlers.

To be clear: I'm not jumping Sahuaro's case. I know how it goes. I hate losing and I know our boys work so hard on the mat that losing feels like dying. I'm glad its opportunity to teach this young man.

I believe it. The Sahuaro coaches looked like they were heading over to handle it in a hurry! Emotions get high, the crowd was into it. We all understand. This is a very physically demanding sport with a lot of emotion involved. Thanks for being on top of it coach! (cougar)
