Looks like the divisions for next year (pending any petitions) have been released.

Only changes I saw are:
Cibola being bumped up to Division 1
Thunderbird being bumped up to Division 2

They have not released any sectional information yet

Something needs to be done about Division I Sections. Here is the breakdown of State results:

D1S1:
32 total placers
6 1st
6 2nd
4 3rd
7 4th
3 5th
6 6th

D1S2:
5 total placers
0 1st
1 2nd
2 3rd
1 5th
1 6th

D1S3
13 total placers
1 1st
2 2nd
1 3rd
4 4th
2 5th
3 6th

D1S4
34 total placers
7 1st
5 2nd
7 3rd
3 4th
8 5th
9 6th

There may have been some good wrestlers left behind at sectionals because only 4 can go. At 106, 113, 120 and 152# all 4 wrestlers from their prospective sections placed. What if the #5 and/or #6 wrestler was better than one from another section? That doesn't make for a true State Championship in my book...just my $0.02

From what I have been told there will be no changes to sections.

They will place Cibola into one of the 4 sections.

I would assume Section 2 since that is the one closest to them geo wise and that is the section they were in before the went down to division 2 a couple years ago.

Cibola is tough. I think they lose a lot of seniors this year. I thought Liberty might also move up. Should be interesting.

Mtn View has 9 returning starters. Lost 5 seniors. Looking at sectionals Sunnyside loses 6 starters. Both teams should still be pretty tough next year.

Something to keep in mind. Only two of the seniors that Sunnyside loses placed at state. Two did not even make it to state. Mesa Mt. View loses a lot more of their team points from the state tournament.

Does anyone know if any teams will be appealing their division placements to the executive board?

I heard rumor the Phoenix union schools might, like they did in all team sports.

I heard rumor Ironwood Ridge will be. (I think they would be the favorites in D1 next year based off of returning points).

But it is all rumor, don't know anything for fact.

Unofficial numbers here, but glancing at the brackets.

Mt. View returns 7 wrestlers who qualified for state and scored a total of 83.5 pts.
Sunnyside returns 7 wrestlers who qualified for state and scored 107 pts.
Ironwood Ridge 7 returns 7 who qalified for state and scored 113.5
Red Mountain returns 4 who scored 62 points

Mt. View probably has more depth in their program than the others at this point in time so I would imagine they'll reload and stay in the mix. If Cibola is in D1 next year then it could be one of the more exciting state tournaments than there's been in years. Four or five teams may have a shot.

On paper I like who Ironwood Ridge brings back. Why would they petition? Arent the D1 already? They didn't get moved down to D2 did they? Or is it rumored that they want to go back to D2?

I think Cibola makes a huge impact on D1. They have a lot of depth as well.

Wow Liberty brings back 11 state qualifiers and 131 points! Tough to beat at D2.

Ironwood Ridge was just a rumor I heard,

that is why I was asking if anyone knew for sure.

Just like the Phoenix union schools is only a rumor.

Liberty should be Division 1, their school is huge. If they stay division 2, they will dominate for the next 3 year block.

I find the number of D2 schools petitioning down to D3 interesting. If you exclude the top 3 teams, I don't see any difference between D2 and D3. There is a definite drop from D1 to D2, and another from D3 to D4. I think a lot of these schools that are dropping down will be disappointed if they think it is gonna get easier for them. It will certainly change the sections around. Possible D3 sections:
D1 North (14 teams) 4 top 10 teams
Blue Ridge, Bradshaw Mtn, Chinle, Chino Valley, Coconino, Flagstaff, Holbrook, Kingman, Lee Williams, Mingus, Mohave, Page, River Valley, Show Low
D2 South (15 teams) 1 top 10 team
Amphi, Canyon Del Oro, Catalina Magnet, Desert View, Douglas, Empire, Flowing Wells, Palo Verde, Pueblo Magnet, Rio Rico, Sabino, Sahuarita, Salpointe, Santa Rita, Walden Grove
D3 West (13 teams) 1 top 10 team
Betty Fairfax, Buckeye, Cactus, Camelback, Dysart, Estrella Foothills, Greenway, Moon Valley, Shadow Ridge, South Mtn., Wickenburg, Youngker, Yuma
D4 East (12 teams) 2 top 10 teams
Apache Junction, Casa Grande, Combs, Coolidge, Coronado, Cortez, Notre Dame, Payson, Safford, Saguaro, Tempe, Williams Field

I think we probably have a pretty good argument state wide to have 3 divisions as opposed to 4. I think that is a good assessment of the competition level between D1 and 2 and D3 and 4. Have some of the larger D2 schools go D1, larger D3 schools to D2, and D4 and remaining D3 become D3. It would make AZ more competitive and make the process to get to state more competitive. Just a thought.

So the Divisions have been settled and the breakdown looks like this:
Division 1: 35 Teams
Division 2: 46 Teams
Division 3: 60 Teams
Division 4: 55 Teams
Sections are supposed to be out later this week so that scheduling can begin. With only 35 teams in D1 and 4 sections of 9 teams, roughly 1/2 of the D1 kids should qualify for state. D2 should qualify roughly 1/3 of their kids. In D3 and D4 it will be closer to 1/4 of the kids qualifying. I hope that they consider qualifying the top 5 or 6 sectional placers from D3 and D4 to make it more of an even opportunity. I didn't think it was right to allow schools that should be D1 with more than 2500 students to drop down to D3 and compete with schools with 700 students. It looks like a double whammy for D3 athletes if they don't allow more qualifiers. It would have been better to create 3 divisions 0-999 students, 1000-1999, and 2000 and up and make it a 32 man bracket. Thoughts??
