D1 2019-2020 Individual Rankings (updated on 1/14)
Obviously lots to process since Mile High, Peoria, other random duals/tourneys. Per usual, I'll try to explain my thoughts on the weight overall and why people are where they are. The usual disclaimer: these don't necessarily reflect what I think about who is better than who...it's just based on results from this season and past state finishes etc.
106
1. Damian Moreno, Kofa, 9th
2. Caidan Cole, Boulder Creek, 10th
3. Jayson Flener, Liberty, 9th
4. Daniel Mendoza, Perry, 12th
5. Javier Duran, Cesar Chavez, 12th
6. Marcus Seiter, Dobson, 9th
Putting Moreno at the #1 spot because of his win over Flener and Rael from Sahuarita, who defeated Cole.
113
1. Zander Phaturos, Liberty, 10th
2. Michael Welle, Red Mountain, 12th
3. Julian Ayala, Kofa, 10th
4. Demarko Gomez, Cibola, 10th
5. John Jarman, Mesa, 11th
6. Jaden Galindo, Cesar Chavez, 10th
7. Gabriel Corrales, Desert Ridge, 9th
8. Peyton Anderson, Mesa Mountain View, 11th
Welle hasn't wrestled any of the top guys at this weight other than Ayala who he pinned, so he goes a spot above him based on that.
120
1. Zach Espalin, Chandler, 11th
2. Noah Kasprowicz, Boulder Creek, 11th
3. Cesar Avelar, Brophy, 10th
4. Anthony Gonzales, Corona, 12th
5. Gabe Ortiz, Mesa Mountain View, 12th
I'd expect to see Roman Provenzano somewhere in here soon, but hard to rank him right now having wrestled no matches outside of the Clash.
126
1. Carson Coy, Liberty, 10th
2. Juan Sierra, Cibola, 10th
3. Bryce Bernard, Valley Vista, 12th
4. Jaxon Rohde, Boulder Creek, 12th
5. Cael Figueroa, Highland, 12th
Coy moves down to this weight as expected. Him and Sierra are very close, but giving Coy the nod based on a head-to-head victory last year.
132
1. Andres Avelar, Cesar Chavez, 12th
2. Andrew Correa, Liberty, 12th
3. Tanner Castillo, Red Mountain, 12th
4. Mourece Ramirez, Desert Vista, 11th
5. Isaiah Valenzuela, Hamilton, 12th
6. Raul Aispuro, Kofa, 12th
I'm including Avelar here even though he wrestled at 138 at Peoria due to barely missing weight. He wrestled 132 at Zinkin though, so I'd assume that is the best weight for him. If he's at 138, he'd be the #1 there and everyone at 132 would shift up a spot. Valenzuela hasn't wrestled since the very start of the year, but for now I'm going to keep him in based on his state runner-up finish last year.
138
1. Tyler Sauter, Liberty, 10th
2. Denton Hardt, Queen Creek, 12th
3. Jonah Muhammad, Hamilton, 11th
4. Hugh Sterns, Sandra Day O'Connor, 12th
5. Caleb Pool, Tucson, 11th
6. Ben Torres, Cibola, 12th
7. Domenic Hurtado, Desert Vista, 11th
8. Mark Prado, Shadow Ridge, 12th
Torres is hard to know where to rank, as his main wins are over Correa and Delgado from Liberty who are both at different weights now. Also, Muhammad dropped down to this weight as expected.
145
1. Zeke Guerrero, Cibola, 12th
2. Edgar Delgado, Liberty, 12th
3. Matthew Andonov, Sandra Day O'Connor, 12th
4. Dalton Loyden, Chandler, 9th
5. Aaron Rascon, Kofa, 11th
6. Adam Booth, Mesa Mountain View, 12th
7. Tlayolot Delfin, Dobson, 12th
8. Shane Aguarin, Corona, 12th
9. Victor Chavez, Cibola, 11th
Lots of tough kids here, I think Guerrero is the clear #1 but could see anyone of the other guys making the finals.
152
1. Alfonso Martinez, Desert Vista, 12th
2. Nicholas Steele, Cibola, 11th
3. Anthony Morales, Kofa, 12th
4. Connor Blakeman, Red Mountain, 12th
5. Gage Beaton, Liberty, 12th
6. Chayce Edwards, Tucson, 12th
7. Kalvin Boggs, Queen Creek, 12th
Adding Steele back in as someone confirmed that he will be at 152 once he is healthy. I'm not sure what weight Morales will be at, considering he was at 152 all year and then at 160 for Mile High. I'm assuming he didn't make weight? Obviously I don't know but going to put him at 152 for now.
160
1. Kamyn Stonebreaker, Liberty, 12th
2. Giovanni Meza, Cesar Chavez, 12th
3. Sebastian Valencia, Cibola, 12th
4. Jacob Cisneros, Boulder Creek, 11th
5. Jarrett Huber, Mesa Mountain View, 9th
6. Justin Prigge, Queen Creek, 12th
Returning 4th place state finisher Prigge drops down to 160, losing in the blood round of Peoria to Huber. Think the top 4 are pretty clear for this weight. If Morales moves up to this weight, I'd probably put him at #3.
170
1. Preston Cameau, Desert Vista, 12th
2. Freddy Latu, Hamilton, 12th
3. Ikaika Maldonado, Perry, 12th
4. David Sweetman, Brophy, 9th
5. Keaton Steck, Desert Ridge, 12th
6. Nicholas Magri, Liberty
Latu moves down and Steck has a good showing at Peoria with a win over Magri.
182
1. Matthew Stevenson, Liberty, 12th
2. Makai Obregon, Valley Vista, 12th
3. Thomas Derr, Brophy, 12th
4. Cesar Pedregon, Red Mountain, 12th
5. Wayne Dunn, Mesa Mountain View, 12th
6. Alex Galindo, Cesar Chavez, 12th
Nothing too exciting here other than Latu moving down.
195
1. Liam Hoffmeyer, Cibola, 11th
2. Kimball Begay, Mesa Mountain View, 12th
3. Ryan Castillo, Hamilton, 12th
4. Bobby Brookins, Red Mountain, 12th
5. Gavin Dodge, Liberty, 10th
6. Rueben Maldonado, Cesar Chavez, 12th
7. Michael Moreno, Boulder Creek, 12th
8. Christian Bower, Chaparral, 12th
Hoffmeyer and Castillo moving down really shake this weight up. A case can be made for either Hoffmeyer or Begay as the #1, I just flipped a coin
220
1. Luke Padwe, Pinnacle, 12th
2. Nathaniel Deasey, Chandler, 11th
3. David Palosika, Mountain Pointe, 12th
4. Preston Arriola, Mesa, 12th
5. William Durbin, Dobson, 10th
6. James Huber, Mesa Mountain View, 11th
7. Jackson Kay, Boulder Creek, 12th
8. Julius Thomas, Red Mountain, 12th
9. Vincente Maestes, Liberty, 12th
Really deep weight, which is not the norm for 220 by any means. I think the top 3 is a tier above the other 6, who I think could all beat each other any given day.
285
1. Jacob Moore, Boulder Creek, 11th
2. Alex Edjourian, Perry, 12th
3. Dante Smith, Desert Ridge, 12th
4. Gregory Down, Cesar Chavez, 12th
5. Frank Thompson, Liberty, 12th
6. Marcos Meza, Cibola, 12th
Becomes a little clearer after Peoria.
